“Turboatom” signed an agreement on the modernization of the South Ukrainian NPP

25.02.2020

Turboatom has signed an agreement on the modernization of high and medium pressure cylinders of Unit No. 2 of the South Ukrainian NPP.

The contract for the amount of 300 million UAH today, on February 25, was signed by Ruslan Zhmudsky, the Director of separate subdivision “Atomkomplekt” of the state-owned enterprise “NNEGC Energoatom”, and Viktor Subotin, the General Director of JSC “Turboatom”. The signing ceremony was also attended by the Deputy General Director of the South Ukrainian NPP Andrii Petruk and the General Designer of “Turboatom” Yevgen Levchenko.

According to Viktor Subotin, the signed agreement is the first contract to modernize the flow part of a 1000 MWe reactors turbine in Ukraine. The company already has positive experience in carrying out similar work for customers outside the country, including at Unit No. 5 of Kozloduy NPP (Bulgaria).

“Ahead of us it is a whole program to modernize the flow path of the nuclear units of Ukraine: both on our turbines and on Russian ones,” Viktor Subotin noted.

Ruslan Zhmudsky said that the signed agreement is part of the already approved 5-year modernization program.

“The program is designed until 2024 and in the situation that has developed now (namely, lack of funding for the construction of new units), the modernization of existing equipment will give us up to 10% of additional capacity. I am at “Turboatom” for the first time and afflicted with this production. I would like to express gratitude to the staff of the enterprise for the work that you do,” said Ruslan Zhmudsky.

According to Andrii Petruk, the South Ukrainian NPP has been using equipment manufactured by “Turboatom” for many years.

“The most important thing for us is the import substitution program, with which “Turboatom” helps us. The modernization, the agreement on which we have signed today, will increase the electric power by approximately 100 MW. I want to note that your products have shown itself to advantage. We don’t see competitors for “Turboatom” around the world,” said Andrii Petruk.

According to Yevgen Levchenko, the five-year program provides for the modernization of another 7 of the same units: 1 unit at South Ukrainian NPP and 6 units at Zaporizhzhya NPP.

“Our designers have found an outstanding solution on how to minimize the cost of modernization: we are talking about the use of backup rotors at the station. It was this solution that allowed us to significantly reduce the cost of the work. The next step is the modernization not of our “1000 MWe reactor turbines”, but the turbines produced by Russian “Power Machines”, - said Yevgen Levchenko.

According to Viktor Subotin, the first modernized rotor will be ready for shipment to the South Ukrainian NPP in early April.
